This course runs on Saturdays for 4 weeks

10am - 2.15pm with a 30min break. Lunch is available from our stylish on-site Café@FTM or from nearby cafés and pubs

This course is for designers who have a basic working knowledge of Illustrator, and wish to learn a combination of simple and complex techniques to create repeat patterns using Illustrator. You will learn how to create patterns using block, brick, drop and sateen repeats.

The course is run at the FTM in a brand-new purpose built learning centre equipped with the latest software and facilities, and tuition is in small groups with a focus on your particular learning requirements.

The course includes the following main topics:

• Creating repeat patterns in illustrator
• How to accurately position and align design elements
• Using Illustrator symbols to create drop and brick repeat pattern designs
• Creating intricate tessellating patterns

At the end of the course:

• You will receive an FTM certificate of successful completion for your CV
• You could develop your skills further by taking a course in Photoshop, InDesign or one of our other courses for designers run here at FTM

Session 1

Creating a block repeat pattern using a number of different techniques

Use move tool to duplicate and place design elements accurately

Using the appearance palette to apply more than one colour or pattern fill to your design

Creating sateen repeat patterns

Session 2

Creating drop and brick repeat patterns

Using symbols to enable you to accurately view and design your repeat designs

Transforming your repeat pattern design i.e scaling, rotating etc.

Session 3

Creating repeat patterns based on hexagons

Creating repeat patterns based on parallelograms

Using Live Colour to easily create colourways

Session 4

Creating tessellating repeat patterns
