Celebrity artwork to be unveiled at Fashion and Textile Museum in aid of Breast Cancer Care

Actress, TV presenter and former Loose Women panellist, Denise Welch, will be unveiling a textured painting on Friday 14 November at the Fashion and Textile Museum to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Care – the only UK-wide specialist support charity. The painting contains material and details from bras donated by celebrities, including Kirstie Allsopp, Lorraine Kelly, Denise Welch, Jane McDonald and the Strictly Come Dancing team. It was created by mixed-media artist, Sharon White, who visited Breast Cancer Care’s central offices in Glasgow, Sheffield and London to involve the charity’s volunteers, supporters and women who have faced cancer in its creation. First-ever exhibition on THEA PORTER is announced

In Spring 2015, the Fashion and Textile Museum is staging the first-ever exhibition on the work of British designer Thea Porter (1927–2000). The exhibition THEA PORTER 70s Bohemian Chic (opens 6 February 2015) explores how Porter established her combination of fashion and interior design, cultivating clients such as Pink Floyd and the Beatles, alongside Faye Dunaway, Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Streisand. In a new partnership with V&A Publishing, the exhibition is accompanied by a new book written by guest curator Laura McLaws Helms and exhibition adviser Venetia Porter. Download Press Release

Visionary Knitwear

The Visionary Knitwear display (19 September – 18 January 2015) is a showcase of bold visions in contemporary fashion knitwear selected by Sandy Black, Professor of Fashion and Textile Design and Technology at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts. Featuring established names Julien Macdonald, Mark Fast, Iben Høj, Sister by Sibling, Lucas Nascimento, Yang Du, Alice Palmer, Juliana Sissons and Amy Twigger Holroyd, among others, as well as recent graduates Rory Longdon, Roisin McAtamney, Camille Hardwick and Matthew Ghabrial, the display highlights the contribution of the UK’s design education training to today’s global fashion knitwear industry. Major new partnership between UK and Mexican museums launches in London this week

A stunning new exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London (opens Friday 6 June) launches an exciting new cultural partnership between the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City and the Museum of Textiles in Oaxaca. The new partnership welcomes the 2015 celebration of the ‘Year of Mexico’ in the UK and the ‘Year of the UK’ in Mexico, which aims to enhance and deepen the bilateral relationship between the governments of both countries. The exhibition also presents a major design exchange programme with the Fashion and Textile Museum, Newham College and students at the University of the Arts London and Universidad Iberoamericana, whose work features in the exhibition. KNITWEAR Chanel to Westwood

KNITWEAR Chanel to Westwood, the Fashion and Textile Museum’s major autumn exhibition, presents over 150 inspirational knitwear pieces from the collection of Mark and Cleo Butterfield, on show to the public for the first time. Opening 19 September 2014, the exhibition presents highlights from designs by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and rare crocheted evening dresses from the 1930s to late 20th century innovations by Vivienne Westwood. Download Press Release

Made in Britain – Walsh Trainers

The Fashion and Textile Museum announces an exclusive display of British trainers, celebrating Britain’s manufacturing heritage. ‘Made in Britain’ traces the unique history of Walsh, currently the only wholly British owned, designed and manufactured sports footwear brand. Download Press Release

Fiction in Fashion

A new display of fashionable fiction at the Fashion and Textile Museum explores what glamorous women have been reading since 1953.
Drawing on the archives of Penguin Books, paperback novels that have been chosen to feature include popular editions of Bonjour Tristesse, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Couples, Lace and The Secret History. Download Press Release
