1920s Jazz Age Fashion

[Hardcover – 30 Sep 2016]
By Martin Pel

Jazz became the world’s first youth movement- combining and celebrating music, fashion and youth, representing a break from the past, from the generation that had taken the world to war, and from old modes of behavior and thought. Jazz embraced the new and the unconventional, and harnessed the unbridled energy of youth in its multitude of expressions.Transcending its musical origins, jazz became a term that was applied to all manner of objects influencing their design and decoration- not least of all fashion. 1920s Jazz Age Fashion & Photographs celebrates haute couture, ready-to-wear and mass-market fashion in America, Britain and France from 1919 to 1929. Richly illustrated with specially commissioned photography, this book examines the social, political and cultural influences of the period through the narratives of jazz’s aesthetic and attitude, featuring fashion from couture to the department store and the iconic photography of James Abbe, whose imagery captured the Jazz Age.

This book accompanied the 1920s Jazz Age exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum, 23 September 2016 – 15 January 2017.
