The Rise and Fall of Fashionable Cocktails
Step into the 1990s and from there into the 21st century at this special viewing of The World of Anna Sui exhibition, with a tasting of the best gin on Bermondsey Street.
The past 30 years have seen fascinating shifts in both fashion and cocktails and this event offers an explanation why. In the 1980s most cocktails were sweet and fruity and the Singapore Sling was as creative as it got. But these sugary drinks gave way to the 1990s Martini trend and since then the craft of cocktail making has returned. Today drinking gin has soared to the highest heights of hipsterdom. With classic recipes, fresh ingredients and artisan distilleries on the rise, this evening is an opportunity to enjoy a fashionable 21st Century gin tasting with the experts on Bermondsey Street.
Here at the Fashion and Textile Museum we are privileged to work on a street with its own artisan tonic water. BTW – aka Bermondsey Tonic Water – specifically created to marry with the exciting range of botanicals used in modern gin. If most high street tonics are synthetic and sweet ‘BTW’ is dry, refreshing and allows the full flavour of each gin to be appreciated. Greeted with a classic Gin cocktail on arrival, you are invited to step back in time to discuss the fashion trends of the last 30 years. After being guided through The World of Anna Sui exhibition, you will be joined in the Fashion Studio by the 214 Bermondsey team for a gin flight-tasting and talk. The flight tasting involves three mini G&Ts with tasting notes. Try them all, and decide which decade you belong to. With BTW, distinguishing your gin palate is easier than you may think!
