With Tilly Walnes
Do you dream of turning your passion into a creative business? A few years ago, Tilly Walnes set out to rethink sewing patterns for modern makers. While statistics for fabric and sewing machine sales suggest home sewing is on the increase, traditional patterns can be intimidating for new starters. Blending her passion for DIY fashion with her professional experience designing learning resources, Tilly decided to create her own line of dressmaking patterns that are accessible and enjoyable for beginners.
Starting from the kitchen table at home, Tilly and the Buttons has grown into a team of four working in a sunny South London studio. Their sewing patterns are now sold around the world, from Paris to Australia, and they run dressmaking workshop in London and online. Tilly’s first book, Love at First Stitch, was a Sunday Times bestseller and has been published in nine languages. Her blog receives 3 million visits a year from sewing lovers old and new. She appeared on BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee and was recently named ‘Favourite Sewing Personality’ in the British Sewing Awards 2015.
Meet Tilly as she shares her story, from the satisfaction of creating her own clothes to the excitement of seeing what other people make with her company’s patterns. For the aspiring entrepreneurs in the audience, hear her experiences starting and growing a creative business and her thoughts on the evolving sewing market and the impact of television. She’ll also be happy to sign copies of her award-winning book, Love at First Stitch.
The event starts at 6pm with a glass of wine in the Museum foyer and opportunity to view the exhibition MISSONI ART COLOUR; the talk follows at 6.15pm for 6.20pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including the chance to ask questions at the end. It is followed by a book signing. Ticket includes admission to the exhibition and guests are welcome to view this before or after the talk.
Price £15 / £12 students includes a complimentary drink and exhibition entry.
