Jewellery Manufacturing Pre-Apprentice course starts in September

Jewellery is a thriving industry in London, one of the most important centres for this global industry.

This course introduces the processes involved in designing and producing jewellery by hand, and is an ideal first step towards a career in jewellery. You will produce your own range of jewellery and show your collection at an end-of-course exhibition. The course will develop your awareness of employment opportunities in this successful industry.

If you are interested in developing your creativity and would like to learn how to make high quality jewellery, this course is for you.  

The course is based in east London and starts twice a year, in September and February. The next course starts on 14th September 2009 and runs 10am – 5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for 18 weeks over three terms.

The tuition fee for 19+ students is £900 (tbc), but individuals may qualify for exemption or financial support. For further information please email chris.hall@newham.ac.uk

What does the course involve?

The course introduces the basic practical and technical processes involved in making jewellery by hand, and covers workshop practice, toolmaking, casting, finishing and polishing, working to a brief, and the design process. The course also investigates the jewellery industry and the employment opportunities it offers, helps you develop your ability to work professionally, and will confirm your personal career objectives.

The course is delivered through practical exercises, projects and some written work. There is a high level of tutor support and regular review of your progress. You will receive a course handbook and scheme of work at the start of the course, but please enquire if you need more details about the course content before application.   

What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?

To develop your skills further you may decide to study at a higher level on the NVQ in Jewellery Manufacturing course which leads to apprenticeship employment with a jewellery company. Alternatively you may develop your understanding of business towards self-employment on the Steps to Entrepreneurship programme or apply for junior employment in the industry. A wide range of other progression courses are also available.    

What do I need to get on the course?

You need to be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in jewellery and a commitment to developing your skills. You are expected to have four GSCEs at grade C+ (or equivalents) including English and maths, but exceptions can be made for applicants who can demonstrate ability and commitment in other ways. You are advised to attend an open day to confirm that this is the right course for you.  

Start date and length of course

The course starts in September and February. The next course starts Monday 12th September 2009 and finishes Wednesday 10th February 2010. It is timetabled 10am – 5pm Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for 18 weeks over three terms.

How much will the course cost?

This course is free to UK and EU nationals under 19, who may also be eligible to apply for Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). The tuition fee for 19+ students is £900 (tbc), but individuals may qualify for exemption or financial support.
