FTM Summer School: Designing Handbags

Whether having a ‘stay-cation’ in the UK or simply looking to expand your skills in fashion and textiles, why not try one of the FTM’s new Summer School courses? Open to anyone wanting to develop skills in a particular area and run by some of the best people in the business.

Designing Handbags - 5 day course

Everybody carries a bag from designer to vintage, they come in all shapes and sizes. Like an old trusted friend,your handbag is always there. 

Find out how handbags have developed from a simple drawstring pouch to a Birkin bag and why? The course will offer the opportunity to learn about  the design process from sketching out your ideas, to choosing materials, creating your own design and producing a range of bags This will include illustrating your ideas.

Course leader is Ann Saunders. She has extensive experience ranging across many areas of the fashion industry.  She began her career designing silk prints in Como, Italy before moving to Denmark as a print designer with international brand In-Wear Matinique.  As design co-ordinator for Laura Ashley she specialized in accessories working closely with Japanese and Australian markets on special projects and licensing.  She was also responsible for the mail order catalogue, paginating, styling, arranging shoots and staging fashion shows. 

She is a visiting lecturer at the London College of Fashion and runs her own accessories company.
