Thursday 28 March | 6pm-8pm
Join filmmakers Jason Jules, Lee Cogswell and Mark Baxter for a screening of their film John Simons – A Modernist which reveals the untold story of one of British menswear’s most influential people, John Simons. A London based retailer and designer, Simons has been putting Modernism in to modern menswear since the 1950s, inspiring and instigating a lexicon of street styles and subcultures including Mod, Skinhead and Suedehead. In doing so, Simons is responsible for shaping the way most of us dress today. The film not only explores the clothing that Simons was integral to introducing and popularising, but also the mind set and lifestyle that went along with it. Featuring interviews with Paul Weller, Kevin Rowland, Suggs, Robert Elms and Sir Paul Smith as well as friends, family and fans.
The screening of the film will be followed by a Q+A with John Simons.
Lee Cogswell and Mark Baxter established Mono Media films in 2013 after meeting on set of a Stone Foundation music video. In addition to John Simons – a Modernist, Mono Media have released the documentaries Tubby Hayes – A Man in a Hurry, Pop Art Life, a film on Sir Peter Blake commissioned by Sky Arts and The Man! – LeRoy Hutson, produced in five-parts for Apple, Acid Jazz and PIAS records. They have also produced two music videos and promotional material for Paul Weller. Outside of Mono Media, Lee Cogswell has made numerous music videos and short film on Nolan Porter and Mark Baxter has twelve books published.
