Thursday 19 November / 6–8pm
With a career spanning five decades, Clive Arrowsmith is one of the most entertaining British photographers and directors you will ever have the pleasure to encounter. Join us for a special evening to hear Clive tell the stories behind the scenes of his most famous fashion and portrait shoots, followed by an event celebrating the first-ever book to document his work.
Born holding a camera and paint brush, Arrowsmith has produced some of the most imaginative images of 20th century fashion. Grace Coddington writes, ‘Clive could always come up with a psychedelic vision to suit the current mood of far-out fantasy in fashion. In one sitting, he was able to capture not only the romance of a Dior coat but the futurism of Pierre Cardin.’ Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue
But it is perhaps Clive Arrowsmith’s portraits that are best known, including Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Michael Caine and the album cover for Wings ‘Band on the Run’. Winner of The Silver Lion Cannes Film Festival for his Hamlet Cigars commercial, Clive is also the only photographer to have shot the Pirelli Calendar two years in succession.
The event starts with an opportunity to view the exhibition Liberty in Fashion; the ‘in-conversation’ event follows at 6.15pm for 6.30pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including the chance to ask questions at the end. It is followed by a book signing and party.
‘ARROWSMITH Fashion, Beauty & Portraits’ by Clive Arrowsmith, Martyn Walsh and Michael Roberts (ACC Editions, 324pp) is published on 28 October and is available for purchase from the Fashion and Textile Museum shop.
Price £15 / £12 students includes exhibition entry and refreshments at the book launch party.
