Curator Talk: Beautiful People

Friday 1 October | 1 - 2:30pm | £7.50 | ONLINE EVENT

Meet the collectors and curators behind the upcoming exhibition Beautiful People: The Boutique in1960s Counterculture in this illustrated panel discussion chaired by Head of Exhibitions Dennis Nothdruft.

Discover how a handful Chelsea boutiques sparked a fashion revolution in the mid-1960s. The panel will be discussing fabulous and rare examples from these era-defining stores and designers, examining the shared free spirit of Granny Takes a Trip, Hung On You, Apple, Biba, Mr Fish, Thea Porter, Ossie Clark and more. In these boutiques, androgyny, individuality and flamboyance ruled. Their outrageously striking designs were inspired by Art Nouveau and Eastern mysticism, alongside the prominence of psychedelic graphics. Changing attitudes towards gender and sexuality, framed by the socio-political climate of the time, inspired new ideas, freedom of expression and an opposition to establishment values.

Mark and Cleo Butterfield of C20 Vintage Fashion own a remarkable private collection of museum-quality vintage fashion. They have supplied clothing to many award-winning film and television productions and their collection has featured in numerous exhibitions including Night and Day: 1930s Fashion and Photographs, 1920s Jazz Age, KNITWEAR Chanel to Westwood and Liberty in Fashion.

Teresa Collenette is guest Curator of Beautiful People: The Boutique in 1960s Counterculture. She is a design historian specialising in the history of scissors. A graduate of the Royal College of Art/Victoria and Albert Museum History of Design Masters programme she has worked on various Fashion and Textile Museum exhibitions, The World of Anna Sui, Liberty in Fashion, 1920s Jazz Age and T-Shirts: Cult Culture Subversion in house and on tour.

Chair: Dennis Nothdruft is Head of Exhibitions at the Fashion and Textile Museum. He has led the exhibitions team at the Museum since it was founded by Zandra in 2003 and previously spent many years working as a design assistant in Zandra Rhodes studios in both San Diego and London.
