Museum Summer School 2017

Short 4-day courses in July and August for Young Designers

Do you love fashion and enjoy designing and styling outfits of your own? Would you like to spend time improving your drawing, design and digital skills alongside other young people who share your enthusiasm? The Museum Young Designers Summer School offers students aged 11-18 the opportunity to learn and practise their design skills to create a portfolio of work.

Part 1: Fashion and Drawing

Course Dates: 25 – 28 July / 10:30am – 4:30pm
This 4-day summer school course will help young designers develop design and drawing skills and will give students an understanding of fashion and textile design processes.

The course is taught by experienced fashion tutors who will guide students to produce a sketchbook of research drawings and design ideas. Taking in a wide range of media across paper, pens, gouache, and collage, participants will craft individual and group collections within a friendly and supportive environment. Against a backdrop of the current Fashion and Textile Museum exhibition you will learn about drawing, colour, how to use different media, and how to develop your creative ideas into finished designs.

The course is aimed at secondary students who are keen to study and improve design drawing and communication skills.

Part 2: Digital Fashion and Textile Design

Course Dates: 1 – 4 August / 10:30am – 4:30pm
This 4-day summer school course introduces the digital design skills used in the Fashion and Textiles industry. Taking inspiration from the designs produced in the Fashion and Drawing Summer School (Part 1), students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to develop their artwork and present their ideas.

Students will cover the following techniques and processes:

  • Create textile design elements from scanned images, photos or drawing tools
  • Learn techniques to create placement prints and repeat patterns
  • Develop textile colourways and design variations
  • Visualise your ideas and learn ways to present your designs
  • Apply artistic effects and fabrics to scanned fashion illustrations

The course is aimed at secondary students who are keen to study and improve digital design skills. This is a beginner’s course, but it is ideal if you have good generic computer skills. Please bring a USB to save your work.
