Party Dances of the 1930s

Thursday 20 December | 2:30pm-4:30pm

Join jazz instructor, Nikki Santilli in this two-hour class to learn some of the classic dances of the 1930s. Take inspiration from the Night and Day: 1930s Fashion and Photographs exhibition and learn to dance with vintage style. This lively and fun workshop is aimed at beginners or those wanting to add something new to their dancing repertoire.

Tutor Nikki will take you through a variety of dances including:

The Palais Glide:  A quintessentially British party dance from 1935 danced in lines travelling around the room and a national favourite for many years.

The Lambeth Walk: A scene from the hit stage show “Me and My Girl” (1937) gave rise to this hugely popular strutting dance. Its fame spread worldwide, with recordings from Duke Ellington to Django Reinhardt.

The Big Apple: From humble origins in a nightclub in South Carolina, to a national sensation, the Big Apple was a circle dance for the swing era! Steps like Organ Grinders Swing and the Suzi Q were easy to pick up. Just follow the caller’s instruction!
The Lindy Hop. A partnered dance from Harlem in the USA, that could swing as much as the big bands. A variant would later come to be known in the UK as the jitterbug or jive.

Dances will be interspersed with historical context and film clips bringing the glamour and excitement of the era to life. Participants are encouraged to put on their finest vintage outfits and revel in 1930s glamour.
