FTM Displays

A series of displays to complement the current exhibition Designing Women: Post-War British Textiles. Entry to all displays is included in the exhibition ticket price: £7 / £5 concessions

Portraits: Women Designers
16 March - 16 June, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
From the University of Brighton Design Archives. A collaboration between Newham College of Further Education and the University of Brighton, this display of twelve unique photographic portraits will explore the image and status of women designers since the 1950s. In addition, a Study Day at the Museum on Wednesday 16 May will explore women’s important role in the history of the design profession, including the opportunities that changes to education and developments in wider society have brought.

Creating a Printed Textile with Sanderson
16 March - 16 June, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
This special display explores the process from conception, design development and through to manufacturing. The Fashion and Textile Museum has been given unique access to the Sanderson studio as we follow the development of vintage-inspired textile ‘Hayward’ from the British heritage brand’s Fifties Collection.

BBC Young Tailor of the Year
16 March - 16 June, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
This spring Emma Martin, a former Fashion and Textile Museum / Newham College student, won the title of 'Young Tailor of the Year'. The museum is delighted to display her BBC3 award-winning jacket in a celebration of the enduring craft of bespoke tailoring.

The Printed Square - Vintage Handkerchiefs
22 March - 16 June, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
Vintage handkerchiefs have become a source of inspiration for contemporary fashion brands. With beautiful examples from the 1920s to 1950s, The Printed Square celebrates early twentieth-century handkerchief design in a magnificent display of colour and pattern. A new book by Nicky Albrechtsen accompanies the display. (This display will be closed to the public on Tuesday 15th May, between 11am-1pm).

My Fashion Look 2012
30 March - 16 June, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
In January 2012 the Fashion and Textile Museum, in collaboration with the publisher Thames & Hudson, invited a new generation of fashion designers under 12 years old to create their favourite outfit for Spring/Summer 2012. My Fashion Look 2012 shows a selection of the submitted and prize-winning works. The display is accompanied by a series of Saturday workshops with the authors of My Fashion Lookbook Jackie Babhout and Cynthia Merhej.

Newham College Fashion Foundation
From 21 May 2012, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am-6pm
The Fashion and Textile Museum is owned by Newham College London. Work from the first cohort of Newham College’s new Fashion Foundation students will be available to see at the Museum. Anyone interested in further details on next year’s course, starting September 2012, can get more information at www.newham.ac.uk
