Redeveloped Fashion and Textile Museum opened its doors in November

9 November 2007

However, this was only the beginning of some major changes to the Museum that hasl taken place over the last few months. Now operated by Newham College, the Fashion and Textile Museum is a hub of learning, ideas and networking for the fashion industry as well as being a venue for a dynamic programme of contemporary exhibitions. This will include:

The Academy at the FTM

The Academy will provide a new focus at the FTM, providing a unique centre for education and professional development within the fashion industries. It will offer a wide-reaching education programme for school, college and university students as well as an innovative business support programme for companies operating in the fashion sector. Launched on 12th December 2007.

Exhibitions at the FTM

As well as the small permanent exhibition from Zandra’s collection, and an archive that can be visited by appointment, the FTM is developing a programme of changing exhibitions exploring elements of contemporary fashion, style and couture. The FTM’s first exhibition is being staged in collaboration with the Getty Images Gallery. Peacocks and Pinstripes, focusing on the often-overlooked area of men’s fashion, running from February to May 2008.

The exhibition programme is also supported by an exciting programme of talks, master-classes, seminars and workshops aimed at attracting high profile designers and businesses from across the sector, as well as budding fashion entrepreneurs and the general public.

Improved visitor facilities

As well developing the FTM to improve the visitor experience, other new facilities include a Fashion Cafe with WiFi access serving high quality refreshments and the Shop@FTM a retail area for designers and manufacturers to showcase exclusive fashion, textile and jewellery items.

A unique space for hire

The only building in Europe designed by Mexican architect, Ricardo Legorreta, the FTM is a stunning venue in the heart of London’s style-conscious Bermondsey Village. There are several spaces available for hire either separately or jointly – perfect for everything from a major fashion or product launch to an intimate meeting or seminar.

Notes to Editors

Entrance to the new permanent exhibition is free of charge. However, please note the full exhibition space will not be open to the public until February 2008.

Newham College of Further Education is one of the largest further education colleges in Europe, with a strong track record in running courses and providing business support in the fashion and jewellery sectors. Newham has been involved at the FTM previously, supporting the development of its learning centre. The creation of the Academy builds on this earlier work.
