Little Black Dress exhibition - talks and workshops

23 June 2008

As part of the celebrations for its new Little Black Dress exhibition, the Fashion and Textile Museum has developed a number of specific talks and workshops to explore in more detail some of the themes in the exhibition.

These talks and workshops showcase the FTM as not only an exhibition space, but also an engaging and exciting place for people to get involved and take part in whatever aspect of design interests them; from fashion and textiles, through to jewellery design and make-up artistry.

Presented by some of the biggest names in the fashion and beauty industries, some of the highlights include:

'An audience with Amanda Wakeley' – the well-respected and internationally known designer Amanda Wakeley launched her signature label in 1990. Over the past decade and a half she has developed an international reputation for designing supremely luxurious, elegant women’s wear and accessories.
Amanda is self-taught and started designing clothes based on a personal passion to create utterly beautiful clothes that women love to wear. She has a reputation for making the women who wear her clothes feel confident, polished and always perfectly dressed.

Amanda will be discussing her work and career with FTM curator Dennis Nothdruft, giving an insight into the development of an international fashion house.

Fashion designer and newcomer, Osman Yousefzada, will be 'Reinterpreting the Little Black Dress' with Erin Mullaney, womenswear buyer at Brown’s Fashion. Osman’s recent collection of LBDs have led to a highly successful collaboration with Mango.

Terry Barber, Director of Make-up Artistry at M.A.C will be presenting a M.A.C Masterclass on 'Iconic make-up through the ages'. From Bardot to Winehouse, the sculpted eye-look is to make-up what the little black dress is to fashion: a timeless classic.

Terry Barber explores and demonstrates the black-lined eye and its many incarnations through the ages. This class will involve a discussion of iconic women who have showcased this look throughout the ages, followed by a demonstration of the techniques employed to achieve this. Terry has worked with Liza Minelli, Diana Ross, Linda Evangelista, Dita Von Teese and Claudia Schiffer amongst others.

To complete the look of that perfect little black dress, the FTM is presenting the 'Little Black Hat' workshop. The workshop offers the chance to make your own exclusive Little Black Hat with one of the country's leading milliners, Mary Jane Baxter.

For the more artistically adventurous there are 'Sketching the Little Black Dress sessions’. Students will be able to sketch the LBDs on display with the assistance of a fashion illustrator, with finished drawings to take away.
