Series of talks and workshops announced to support this new exhibition at the FTM

13 October 2008

The Fashion and Textile Museum is playing host to a new exhibition entitled Billy: Bill Gibb's Moment in Time. Crowned 'Designer of the Year' by British Vogue in 1970, Gibb was an enormous talent and visionary who in the age of the mini skirt created beautiful, revolutionary, renaissance-inspired clothes.

Alongside this exciting retrospective of a man whose designs came to the attention of the rich and famous, the FTM is running a number of activities by leading journalists, designers and illustrators to coincide with the exhibition. Some of the highlights include:

• Kaffe Fassett, a life long friend and collaborator with Gibb and world-renowned as a guru in the world of colour and textiles, will give a talk providing the opportunity to hear first hand about the way he works, his inspirations and techniques.

• A fashion journalist of international standing, Iain R Webb has written a book about the life of the designer - Bill Gibb, Fashion and Fantasy, published by V&A publishing to coincide with the exhibition.  He was fashion editor of The Times and Elle magazine, and writes today for a variety of newspapers and magazines.

• If you prefer something more hands-on, there are a number of activities to choose from. Perhaps a hand stitching and embroidery workshop inspired by Bill Gibb's wonderful illustrations of nature, or maybe a knitting workshop exploring the use of colour or even creating your own festive fascinator in a millinery workshop.

Tickets to the talks and workshops also include entrance to the exhibition which features sixty of Bill Gibb's creations which have been carefully chosen to demonstrate the breadth of his work and represent his ‘look' overall.  The stories behind the objects also provide a snapshot into Gibb's most prolific design period between the years of 1972-78, with firsthand personal stories by the people that knew him best; his friends and family.

The exhibition opens to the public on 24th October and runs until 18th January 2009.
