Fashion and Textile Museum, with Thames & Hudson, announces new competition and display for children under 12 years old.

Competition deadline 5 March 2012
Display 30 March – 16 June 2012

The Fashion and Textile Museum, in collaboration with the publisher Thames & Hudson, is seeking to inspire a new generation of fashion designers with their current exhibition ‘Catwalk to Cover: a front row seat’ (until 25 February) and a new competition for children under 12 years old to create their favourite outfit for Spring/Summer 2012.

Today fashion is a key part of the UK’s creative industries: the sector employs nearly a million people and is distinguished by the originality of its designers. The UK is also a world-leader in fashion education. Yet the subject is rarely taught in schools. The exhibition ‘Catwalk to Cover’ plus the ‘My Fashion Look’ competition and display seeks to engage a new generation of would-be designers in the imaginative process of creating a fashion outfit and the skills to present this.

To be in with a chance of winning a prize and having an outfit displayed in the Fashion and Textile Museum, design an outfit – complete with hair, make-up and accessories – to head your Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Sketch it, paint it, collage it: how you choose to express your idea is entirely up to you.

Entrants are encouraged to consider the processes of a real fashion designer – finding inspiration, making a mood board, experimenting with colours, fabrics, print and pattern, and creating a ‘lookbook’ to show off the new range. Inspiration can be sought at the Fashion and Textile Museum’s current exhibition ‘Catwalk to Cover: a front row seat’ (until 25 February) www.ftmlondon.org.

Entry forms are available at www.thamesandhudson.com but please note that entries do not need to be sent on the official form providing name, age and school address are included. The closing date for entries is Monday 5 March 2012. Winners will be awarded their prizes on Tuesday 27 March, and their work with other selected entrants will go on display at the Fashion and Textile Museum from 30 March to 16 June 2012. In addition, to celebrate the launch of the new publication ‘My Fashion Lookbook: Design Your Own Collection’ by Jackie Bahbout and Cynthia Merhej, the Fashion and Textile Museum has teamed up with Thames & Hudson to run a series of Saturday workshops on 7 April and 14 April during the Easter holidays.
