Vintage Fashion: The Complete Story

Thursday 6 November / 6-8pm

Want to build a vintage wardrobe? Keen to explore the signature fashion looks of the 20th century? Join us on a journey through the last 100 years of women’s clothing as vintage expert Nicky Albrechtsen highlights influential garments and hallmark styles.

From 1920s embellishment, and 1950s printed cocktail dresses to the sequined shoulder pads of the 1980s, this talk explores trends through the decades as well as perennial themes like the little black dress, wedding outfits, and accessories from hats to shoes. Invaluable practical advice for fans and collectors of vintage including how to date, clean and care for clothing is also on offer.

Albrechtsen brings her experience as both costume designer and stylist to the task of investigating how vintage fashions influence contemporary style. She will be joined in a panel discussion by the costume designer Susannah Buxton, whose film and television credits include ‘As You Like It’, ‘Burton and Taylor’ and ‘Downton Abbey’, and by Clive Reeve, Design Director, Oasis Stores.

The talk and discussion coincides with the book launch and signing for Vintage Fashion Complete, Albrechtsen’s latest book and the definitive volume on 20th century fashion. Vintage Fashion Complete is available for purchase from the Fashion and Textile Museum shop soon.

Nicky Albrechtsen is a costume designer, photographic stylist and owner of Vintage Labels, a resource studio for fashion, textile and costume designers. She is the author of Scarves (with Fola Solanke), Fashion Spectacles / Spectacular Fashion (with Simon Murray) and The Printed Square, all published by Thames & Hudson.
